Curriculum
Curriculum
Our parish religious education program is structured to provide catechetical instruction in the Catholic faith to all parish children who are not attending a Catholic school. Parents, by word and example, teach their children from birth throughout life. The School of Religious Education ministry is here to assist parents in the spiritual formation and ongoing moral development of their child through a formal program of continuous religious education.
Families entering SRE do so with the knowledge that the curriculum extends through 8th grade. Young people choose to enter the Confirmation journey in 9th grade and the sacrament is received in the spring of 10th grade. It is important to understand that the entire body of the Catholic doctrine is not conveyed in any single year but that each year of religious builds on those that proceeded and lead to what follows.
Grade Level Standards for SRE model those used with the Department of Catholic schools:
Grade 1: God created each person to live in a caring and loving environment. Jesus is God’s Son who died and rose for us. Learn the Sign of the Cross, Our Father and Hail Mary.
Grade 2: Through the study of Jesus’ life, the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist are studied. Review of basic prayers and learn the Act of Contrition.
Grade 3: Jesus, our friend, invites us to teach others about our church. Review prayers; learn the Apostles Creed (revised translation), Stations of the Cross and the Rosary.
Grade 4: Through the study of the Ten Commandments, we learn how to love others. Review prayers: learn the Angelus; learn the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.
Grade 5: We meet Jesus in the seven sacraments. Learn the Beatitudes and the Liturgical Year. Review prayers; learn the Hail, Holy Queen, and the Nicene Creed (revised translation).
Grade 6: Through the study of the bible, we explore the Old Testament and Jesus’ roots in the Jewish community. Review prayers, learn the Memorare.
